Mid-century houses are supposed to have open layouts, but this beautiful brick rambler in Seattle's Broadview neighborhood (built in 1954) had a cramped, boxy kitchen with no flow to the family's living spaces. We opened up the kitchen, built a new expansive island, and installed gorgeous tilework and custom cabinetry, including a perfectly proportioned room divider instead of a wall! We also built a new bathroom with a walk-in shower, custom walnut vanity and floating walnut shelves, and remodeled the laundry room to make it both functional (we included a countertop for folding clothes and a dropdown drying rack) and good-looking. Finally, we replaced all of the house's old windows with new, energy-efficient ones. Now the kitchen has the beauty (and energy!) of mid-twentieth-century design with the functionality of the mid-twenty-first century. Interior design by Seriously.Happy.Homes.
