Rock On

Have you ever dreamed of rocking out in your own music studio? NRC Homes converted an existing garage into a music studio with an adjoining control room. The homeowner hasn't quit his day job yet, but never say never!

The challenge with this project was soundproofing: the homeowner didn't want his music to disturb the neighbors. We built a second set of 2x4 walls within the garage, spaced one inch away from the original exterior walls. We insulated both walls with rock wool. Then on top of that, we installed resilient channels, a layer of sound-dampening vinyl, and a double layer of drywall. We also installed a double-layered door system; the outer door opens out and the inner door opens in. Finally, the window between the music studio and control room is also doubled: two separate sets of double paned glazing, with each layer of glass a whopping 6 mm. The HVAC setup is no less impressive, with one minisplit in the studio and another in the control room, and an HRV system serving both rooms. LVP flooring and wood paneled accent walls bring some warmth to the space. Design by NRC Homes and photography by Northwest Residential Photography.
