The Open Door Cottage is actually a DADU (a detached accessory dwelling unit) in the backyard of The Open Door House, designed and built by NRC Homes for the homeowners' parents. While the cottage is aging-in-place friendly now (look at the handrails on both sides of the stairs and the grab bars and curbless shower in the bathroom), it used to be a decrepit old detached garage opening off the alley. We converted the old garage into the cottage you see here, with two bedrooms, an upper-level great room, a private deck, and one-and-a-half baths. And, finally, we did our best to keep the design elements consistent from house-to-cottage: employing the same finishes and style throughout both buildings.
